  2. Description of "Our Community"
We live and go to school in a unique part of the world, a stretch of coastal California just north of Santa Barbara which has remained relatively unchanged over the centuries. Long ago, the Chumash Indians knew this to be a sacred place. Later, to the Spanish and Mexicans, it was known as La Nuestra Senora del Refugio. Today, it is farmed and ranched, but still retains its magic and beauty. There is a sense of continuity, a palpable connection to the past. Our community is made up of the people whose lives, work, and dreams are here. They are the ranchers, farmers, workers, poets, teachers, parents, grandparents, children... all who have taken their places in the endless cycle of this timeless coast. Our love of the land unites us.

  3. Summary of Our Project
To better understand our past and ourselves, the sixth grade students of Vista de las Cruces have been interviewing the local ranchers and old-timers whose lives have been shaped by this land. We believe it is essential to pause, look back, and listen. In so doing, we have received the gift of their stories and felt a kinship that transcends generations. The purpose of our site is to share this journey with others. We have transcribed the memories and tales of our community elders; described our own impressions and reflections about the experience; done some drawings; and offer advice to other students who might wish to launch an oral history project within their own communities. We have also written poems inspired by our love of the area in which we live, and the respect and affection we feel towards the older people who allowed us to interview them.

  4. Our Internet Access
Our school accesses the Internet via analog modems. Ranging from 9600B to 28,800B, four teachers share a single telephone line.

  5. Problems We Had To Overcome
Having only one Internet capable computer for this class was a problem although not nearly as great as the problem of time. In our rural community, travel is a problem and kids could not stay after school.

  6. Our Project Sound Bite
This project has allowed our students and younger teachers the opportunity to know some of our outstanding senior citizens. The interest displayed by the senior citizens in our school surprised us.

Project Elements

This section explains the project elements found in the CyberFair Project Assignment.

  1. How did your activities and research for this International School CyberFair 97 project support your required coursework and curriculum requirements?

The project fit nicely into our language and social study guidelines in the areas of interviewing, writing and local history. Our Board of Trustees is keen on our students doing community service projects and this project was perfect in that regard. Listening and interpreting skills were improved as well as writing. For some students, visiting with the elders was their first ever meeting with senior members of the community. Deciding on the form of the final pages and interview questions meant that we were required to practice cooperative study and work. Questioning elders about living conditions and "old times" has given us a good concept of modernization and an appreciation for our community. In language arts, we are required to do interviewing and writing. In social studies, we pursue local history and the growth of California. In computer skills, we had a chance to learn scanning and using the Internet. We learned that many people we do not know have always been concerned about our small school and its students. Our school and its students have been an important part of this rural community. The Internet has allowed us to look at educational projects and students that we would never have a chance to know. We had a chance to publish our material in a new way. By putting our work on the Internet, more people can see our work and enjoy it.

  2. What information tools and technologies did you use to complete your CyberFair project?

We used recorders, video cameras, 35mm cameras, telephones, computers, digital camera, scanners, and printers. The cameras, recorders, and scanners help us to gather information and images for the compiling of the project. Computers helped us write our information and the modem and telephone helped us to arrange for interviews and finally to see our project in a completed state. Tools were located in the classrooms and computer lab of Vista de Las Cruces School. All of the tools were acquired by the school or belonged to teachers. Video and audio recording and computers were most valuable to us as we went to the ranches to visit the elders. These tools allowed us to concentrate on our hosts and later we could write down the information. Computers, scanners, and HTML editors were very helpful to us. Without these, we could not have put together the project.

  3. In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

When we visited the ranches we told our hosts that our work would be on the Internet. Some students live on the ranches and we contacted our elders directly. We traveled to the ranches and interviewed our hosts. Sometimes, we would hike around the ranch. Some ranchers let us visit their orchards. They simply told us or the teachers that they were happy about what we were doing.

  4. What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Some parents have seen our pages. We have looked at them in class. The project is the first of its kind in this community and our senior citizens are the featured people in the project. One Trustee wrote us an email note telling us how much he liked the pages. So far, everyone who has seen the pages has enjoyed them and is glad to see them.

  5. How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The teachers in the school helped us as well as the good ranchers in the community. Each of the teachers helped in certain parts of the project.
