A flower seed industry was founded and gave the area a world-wide name. L.D. Waller came to Guadalupe in 1908 after surveying conditions in several parts of California. He choose the Guadalupe area because a combination of soil, water, seasons, temperature, sunlight, and humidity characteristics made growing conditions that were nearly ideal for his purpose. The seed Industry was called Waller-Franklin Seed Company. The company began with thirty acres of land near Guadalupe and was so successful that they increased their planting to 2,200 acres the second year. The fields were called "The largest flower garden under cultivation in the world." After Dr. Franklin died in 1934 the farm became Waller Flower Seed Company and is still in operation today. On 600 to 800 acres, the Waller operation now continues extensive flower-breeding activities to improve the growth and and esthetic characteristics of more than 800 varieties. The company's seed production is sold wholesale to retail packagers who distribute the seed under brand names to worldwide markets.
Today in Waller Flower.
| Every year Waller has a flower show. People all over the world come and visit the company. They come to see the new flowers that are produced by other flowers. This happens when they mixed other flowers to produce a new color. They also do this so other flower companies come and see and they get new ideas and they will get more customers to buy their flowers. The show is during April it lasts one week and there's food to eat too. A worker from Waller takes a part of the people to show, and explains there how it works. |
